Disability Justice Webinar Series – Webinar 2

ICADV has partnered with the Multicultural Efforts to End Sexual Assault (MESA) and the Indiana Coalition to End Sexual Assault (ICESA) to develop a free prevention webinar series focused on disability justice. The webinar series seeks to share how to collaborate effectively with people with a variety of disabilities, including developmental and intellectual disabilities, and to develop a shared understanding of the problem of inequity to build common solutions across the state of Indiana. The disability services and advocacy field have a mantra: “Nothing about us without us.” Multiple disabilities are represented on the collaborative team organizing and developing the series, and the team includes people who receive disability services and people who work in disability services or advocacy themselves. Below you can find more details about the each webinar in the series.

June 27, 2018: Webinar 2 – Legal Guardianship & Consent

1:00 – 2:30 PM

Sexual consent is complicated for any person, but what might it be like for a person who is not legally allowed to make such decisions for themselves or in their relationships? Sexual consent and legal guardianship of adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities is the topic of the second webinar f the 5-webinar Disability Justice and Violence Prevention series brought to you collaboratively by ICADV, MESA, and ICESA. This webinar will address common questions regarding legal guardianship and consent as they relate to Hoosiers with disabilities. How does guardianship impact sexual autonomy for adults who are not their own guardian? Put a different way, when a person is not their own guardian, how does sexual consent work? How does sexual consent work (can it work?) for people who seem to be excepted from ever consenting per the definition of rape in Indiana (i.e., the two clauses about impairment)? What are the legal barriers to consent and sexual autonomy for people who are not their own guardian? How does a person who has a guardian advocate for themselves to become emancipated?
